Inspiration

Jewell Washington of Northknits is the designer of the twenty first square of our afghan.

When I hear Jewell’s name the first thing that comes to my mind is Our Maker Life. OML is a movement for makers by makers launched in May 2016 founded by Jewell. Since then, OML has grown into a community of more than 100,000 fellow makers passionate about the fiber arts. The OML movement also has an annual international OML maker meet-up events, where makers have the opportunity to connect with other makers and industry professionals. That’s one of the reasons why this event is high on my list of top gifts for crocheters & knitters!

As if this were not impressive enough, Jewell also manages Northknits, her knit and crochet all-in-one pattern shop and blog. There she shares her love for DIY, exclusive pieces and pattern designs, and encouragement to embrace slow living. I definitely encourage you to visit her space and read her original approach to yarn life in her blog post, here.

Project

For this square, I used again the Cream Norway 10 ply yarn from Morris & Sons and my 4.0 mm knitting needles.

There are so many textures in this afghan!!!

Here is the pattern for Square Twenty One of the Traveling Knit Afghan.

This square features a rib stitch called the Garter Rib Stitch. When I saw it – once again – I couldn’t believe you could get all this texture with just knits and purls, but once again… believe it! A beautiful and easy sequence of knits and purls over a 2-row repeat. And that’s it, technique-wise!

However, this square did need a little adjustment, as my gauge was nothing close to 14 stitches. I ended up casting on 42 stitches (and still needed to block somewhat aggressively) and making 66 rows to be able to get the 10”/25.5 cm.

Final thoughts on Square Twenty One

An easy peasy square with a beautiful rib pattern!

Jewell is a fan of slow living and this square is a great expression of that. So take your time, enjoy the simplicity of making basic stitches, and see how wonderful the result is!

So, take care, and I’ll see you in the next square!
