Traveling Knit Afghan – Square Thirteen by Evelyn & Peter
Square Thirteen of the Traveling Knit Afghan is out and about to start off the second half of this year-long KAL!
After its stop in Nevada, USA with jellyKnitting, the Traveling Knit Afghan is now Utah. Read this post to know how it all started.
Inspiration
The thirteenth square of our lovely afghan was designed by Rachel Misne of Evelyn & Peter.
You’re probably thinking the same thing I did when I read her name. “But I thought Evelyn & Peter was a crochet blog… Is this right?” Yes, it is! Rachel is best known for her gorgeous crochet designs, but her story with yarn actually starts out with knitting.
And what a cute story! Now, I don’t want to give too much away, but she started her yarn journey with her husband Sean. And that was what inspired her design for this square. So go to her blog for all the details and find out why this expert crocheter has knitted (instead of crocheted) a square for us!
Project
I’m starting the second half of my afghan with the same color I started it with. That is, the Beige color of the Norway 10 ply yarn from Morris & Sons.
Just as before, I’m using my 4.0 mm knitting needles for this square.
And to finish off, I’m using my blocking mats to get a clean look for the square.
My heart mellows every time I get these all together. 🙂

Traveling Knit Afghan – Square Thirteen by Evelyn & Peter
Here is the pattern for Square Thirteen of the Traveling Knit Afghan.
The pattern is a mix of Stockinette Stitch and Garter Stitch. Which translates into rows of knits and purls and rows of the simple knit stitch. Ta-dah! Easy peasy. Nothing to worry about.
Except… Gauge!! I was happy doing my knitting, thinking I’d be done with this square in no time. Then I looked at the square and it was HUGE!! It was already bigger than 11”/28 cm in width and it was going the same way lengthwise. I couldn’t believe that the easiest of stitches was going to make me do some math. Fortunately, the pattern is pretty straightforward so I was able to adjust it easily. I had to take out 5 stitches and 2 rows of each section (so 10 rows total) to get the right measures.
With the gauge figured out and the pattern adjusted, I had the finished square on the blocking mat in just a couple of hours. Read more about blocking, in this post here.
Final thoughts on Square Thirteen
Rachel is a very talented crocheter, so it was a really nice surprise to see her contribution to the Traveling Knit Afghan.
But more than that, her yarn story is a very sweet one. And by sharing it with us, she reminded me that some of the best moments in life are the simple ones that we share with the people we love. 🙂
