The Crochet Christmas Baby Overalls is another pattern designed for the season. With the goal of helping you out on your final Christmas makings, this is an easy pattern that will have all the new parents in your life drooling over your crochet skills!

Inspiration

To continue with the Christmas designs that will fit all your gifting needs, here is the pattern to gift those who have babies!

After the Christmas home decor with the coaster and matching placemat, it’s now time to bring the theme to garments! And I don’t know if it’s just me, but it seems a lot of people are having babies or just had them. That’s why my next move is to design a Christmasy baby outfit!

The Project

If you’re starting to know me, then you know that I couldn’t go for a beanie. Even though it would be truly quicker and just as nice, you know I’m a freak for challenges. That’s why I decided to make baby overalls!! It’s still a quick project, as most baby clothes, and according to sources, overalls are one of the most practical garments for babies.

Now, something I realized very quickly was that I had no idea about a baby’s body measurements. I did check the internet, but I was still missing some numbers. Thankfully, one of my friends was patient enough to keep sending me messages, showing me the measurements of her son’s clothes. 😉

With all the measures on my side, all that was missing was deciding on how to decorate this outfit. This time, I went for a snowman (yes, I still have leftovers from the Cloud 9 Sweater). Better yet, a snowman with a scarf!

The Yarn

For this winter project, I went with Rosários4 Bambino in bright red! I am really enjoying the variety of yarns from Rosarios4 and this one did not disappoint. It is the softest yarn I’ve touched in a while and it goes through a special treatment with aloe vera making it ideal for children’s garments.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: chain
  • rs: right side
  • sc: single crochet
  • sk: skip
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • t: turn

Special Stitches

single crochet and slip stitch decrease
  • insert hook in working st and draw up a loop as if to make a single crochet (2 loops on hook). Insert hook in next working st, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • The overalls are worked bottom-up, making one leg and then making a second one that will attach to the first and making the bottom. The front and back are then worked up. The snowman is cross-stitched in the front.
  • I recommend placing a stitch marker in the first st of your rounds to know where the rounds start and finish.
  • The back of the overalls is considered the panel where the seam from joining the rounds is.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of rounds does not count as a st.
  • The buttonhole described in the patterns works for buttons with ¾ ” / 2 cm diameter. If your buttons have different measures take that into account when making the front columns and attaching the buttons.
  • The details are cross-stitched using the grid fabric that results from the single crochet. Each cross stitch will be made in the space between 2 sts in one row.
  • The schematic counts the columns from left to right and the rows from top to bottom.

Buttons

Using Color B.

Attach the buttons in the middle of the 3rd row counting from the edge of the strap, so that they are facing out when you dress the overalls.

Snowman

The details are cross-stitched using the grid fabric that results from the single crochet. Each cross stitch will be made in the space between 2 sts in one row to make a grid. The grid and schematics count the columns from left to right and the rows from top to bottom.

Using color C.

Using an embroidery needle and with the rs of the overalls facing you, cross stitch the snowman according to the schematic, taking into account that the upper right corner of the schematics coincides with the 6th st, 5 rows down from the edge of the front of the overalls.

Using color D.

Using an embroidery needle, make the scarf by passing the needle several times over the same sts.
